The Year of the Snake and the Wisdom of Change

Today marks the Lunar New Year.

The Snake as a Symbol of Renewal

I’ve talked before about spirit animals, the signs that appear in our lives, and the messages we can take from them. The world around us is constantly communicating if we choose to listen. Right now, as many people celebrate the Lunar New Year, we find ourselves entering the Year of the Snake—a powerful symbol of transformation, renewal, and deep wisdom.

Shedding the Old to Welcome the New

Traditionally, the snake represents rebirth. Its ability to shed its skin is a potent reminder of the cycles of life, the necessity of letting go, and the beauty of becoming something new. But beyond physical transformation, the snake is also a symbol of healing, intuition, and honoring the wisdom we carry within us. It encourages us to protect what is authentically true to us and to reconnect with the ancient knowledge that resides in our lineage and spirit.

Understanding Your Own Ancient Wisdom

When I speak of ancient wisdom, I don’t just mean something distant or esoteric. It can be found in our genetic memory, passed down through generations—our parents, grandparents, and siblings. It’s the lessons and values we inherit, the ones we embrace, and even the ones we reject. Taking the time to reflect on these influences can reveal the ways they’ve shaped us, consciously or unconsciously. What have we dismissed because it didn’t seem to fit our path? What have we held onto as a core part of our being? And how do these choices define where we are headed?

The Power of Flexibility and Trust

For me, snakes also embody flexibility—the ability to move fluidly through change, to sense what no longer serves us, and to release it. Shedding old identities, outdated beliefs, and past versions of ourselves is not always easy. It requires trust. It requires surrender. And most of all, it requires a willingness to step into the unknown without rigid expectations of what the future will look like.

Facing Fear and Embracing Authenticity

One of the greatest challenges in transformation is the loss of familiarity and the uncertainty of what comes next. I experienced this firsthand when I decided to publicly share my intuitive abilities over 13 years ago. I was terrified of what I might lose—the relationships, the respect, the acceptance of those who had known me for years. Some people dismissed it outright, questioning how someone they had known so well could claim such a thing. Even my husband, to this day, remains skeptical. And yet, despite the doubts of others, I knew who I was.

Walking Your Own Path

This is the essence of the snake’s lesson: transformation is not about proving yourself to others—it’s about honoring your truth. Reinvention comes with risks. It comes with loss. But it also comes with freedom. As we move into this new year, the Year of the Snake invites us to embrace our own metamorphosis, to let go of what no longer fits, and to trust that the people who truly support us will remain, even if they don’t fully understand our journey.

Trust in the Process

Not everyone will accept your evolution, and that’s okay. Growth often means leaving behind those who can’t walk the path with you. But in the end, what matters most is showing up as your true self—unapologetically, authentically, and courageously. This year, let the snake guide you through transformation, and trust that the shedding of old skin is simply making room for the new.
